The NFL's decision came after a Tuesday meeting with athletes and union representatives.
The president has picked a very public fight with the league over ongoing player protests during the national anthem played before games, decrying the protests as unpatriotic. At a rally in September, Trump implored football fans to leave games at which players protest, and said owners should respond to players by saying, "Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he's fired."
Teams across the NFL responded with showings of "solidarity" the following Sunday, though the showings somewhat clouded the original reason for the protests.
Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to draw attention to police brutality in the United States. He has since found himself without a contract, and is now suing NFL owners, alleging they've colluded to keep him out of the league.
