2024 marks 79 years since atomic bombs were detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug. 6 and 9, 1945 — the only times nuclear weapons have been used during warfare.
The American Society of Hiroshima-Nagasaki A-Bomb Survivors would like to invite the public to its 79thannual Commemoration Service for A-Bomb Victims and Survivors, which will be held in-person on Sunday, Aug. 4, from 2 to 3 p.m. at Koyasan Buddhist Temple, 342 E. First St. in Little Tokyo.
“We look forward to seeing our friends and colleagues as we honor those who perished and support the survivors who are still with us,” event organizers said.
This year’s guest speaker will be ASA Director Darrell Miho, who is also a photographer who has been documenting and preserving the stories from atomic bomb survivors for the benefit of future generations. There will be special messages from the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and Bishop Yuju Matsumoto from Koyasan Buddhist Temple, plus an update of ASA’s past events.
This event will be emceed by ASA Interim Co-Presidents Howard Kakita and Dr. Gloria Montebruno-Saller.
For questions, contact Miho at [email protected] or Montebruno-Saller at [email protected].
ASA is a nonprofit organizations that represents over 250 members from Hawaii and Los Angeles who have witnessed atrocities that can not be imagined. ASA’s hope is for peace in the world through the abolishment of all nuclear weapons so that no one else will ever experience the pain and suffering that its members have endured.
