People clowned for love and fought over chicken sandwiches. But more importantly, the world became absolutely obsessedwith eggs.

An overwhelming amount of egg content was shared on social media this year, and eggs made several prominent appearances in television shows and movies. A bunch of eggs were cooked, and one was even passionately smashed on a problematic Australian official.

As 2019 comes to a close, it's crucial to look back at the year of the egg and revisit 14 of the most eggciting viral egg moments. Let's get cracking.

1. The Instagram egg

The year of the egg started off strong when a mysterious account with the handle @world_record_egg set out to dethrone Kylie Jenner announcing the birth of her daughter Stormi as the most liked post on Instagram.

On Jan. 4, @world_record_egg shared a painfully bland stock photo of an egg and asked the good people of the internet to help set a world record. To make history, the post would need to gain more than 18 million likes. It seemed like an impossibly large and positively unattainable number, but people love a challenge. The boring egg photo wound up receiving more than 54! million! likes! An incredibly dumb but happy ending for everyone except Kylie Jenner.

2. The eggs that took over TikTok

After the Instagram egg went viral, TikTok users (casually referred to as the Egg Gang) started making creative videos to properly honor it. You can watch a few from the beginning of the year here, but it's important to note that as time went on the egg TikToks got increasingly more cursed. (Like these guys who "scrambled" an egg in one of the grossest ways possible.)

3. The #EggChallenge

Back in 2018 people started having their dogs take the "Egg Challenge," but when TikTok took off in 2019 the #EggChallenge got a second wind. Dog owners began once again sharing extremely wholesome videos of their pups gently cradling eggs in their mouths, and a cat even tried to partake. Obviously, things did not go well.

4. The "bigger than before" egg

Remember in June when Twitter user @chipspopandabar shared an extremely pointless clip of a 5-Minute Crafts video? The footage showed an egg become "bigger than before" after a painfully involved process of soaking it in various liquids for literal days. Why would you want to grow an egg? No clue. All we know is that that if you obtain some vinegar, maple syrup, blue food dye, and some other shit you can make an egg Bigger. Than. Before.

5. The Masked Singer egg

For those who are unfamiliar with The Masked Singer, it's a singing competition that features celebrities concealing their identities with the help of elaborate costumes. Season 2 kicked off with a celebrity dressed as some sort of egg person wearing a raw egg hat (?) and people were instantly intrigued. We don't want to spoil the identity of this egg for anyone, but if you're dying to know you can click here.

6. Liu Shichao drinking raw eggs

Videos of Liu Shichao — the mystifying man who drinks a genuinely concerning amount of alcohol, raw eggs, and whatever other crap he feels like at a rapid pace — really made the rounds on Twitter this year. People are both horrified by and filled with respect for the dude.

7. When that teen egged an Australian official

Back in March, one brave teen egged Australian senator Fraser Anning after he made a racist statement about the Christchurch, New Zealand mosque shootings, which killed 49 people. Anning punched the teen in the face in response to the egging, and footage of the exchange wound up going viral. Many praised the teen for his egg wielding, and a GoFundMe fundraiser was quickly set up for him. A mural was even created in his honor.

8. Succession's "Greggs"

If there's one thing we learned in 2019 it's that you simply can't make a Tomlette without breaking some Greggs. Succession's Tom Wambsgans imparted this astounding wisdom during a congressional hearing when explaining a series of 67 emails he sent to (Cousin) Greg between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. on the night of March 12. I guess it was a joke.

9. The Egg! The Egg! The Egg!

There was perhaps no celebration of eggs in 2019 that surpassed the one found in The Mandalorian. In Chapter 2 of the Disney+ Star Wars saga, the Mandalorian himself has to haggle with a group of unruly Jawas who have stolen his ship parts. To get them back, Mando has to go fetch an egg from a mudhorn, which is a pretty large and aggressive beast.

When he returns with the giant, fur-covered egg in tow, the Jawas go hog wild over this ovum. They start chanting, “The egg! The egg!” over and over as they crack into it and sop up its gooey yellow innards with unabashed glee. They don’t even use utensils, they go right in with their grubby little hands. To these Jawas, there is nothing better than this egg.

10. Dr. Manhattan's egg

In HBO’s Watchmen, the god-like blue man Dr. Manhattan opines about how he could create life inside of a common chicken egg. Eggs pop up here and there throughout the show as food, metaphors, and more. One egg in particular plays an important role in the final scene of the season, after the cacophonous denouement, where one of the characters cracks open a raw egg above their open mouth and swallows it. By the end, it feels like eggs are a central element to Watchmen, solidifying the egg as an incredibly important symbol of the year.

11. Egg bundt

On a dark September day that will henceforth be known as "the day the egg bundt was born," Twitter user @itsmarshallb shared two horrific photos from "the official Instant Pot Facebook group" that will simply ruin your life. A bunch of eggs were put in a cake pan and I guess baked??The result? A horrific-looking egg bundt cake, or large egg donut, that you can slice up. Truly dark.

12. The return of the long egg

Y'all remember the long egg? Cursed cylindrical egg tubes have been online for years, but in 2019 the meme made an unexpected return thanks to the egg bundt. Here's how you can make your own!

13. Baby Yoda deviled eggs

Some might argue that 2019 was the year of baby Yoda, not the year of the egg. And to that I say, December itself was certainly the monthof baby Yoda, but the year as a whole certainly belonged to eggs. Fortunately, Baby Yoda and eggs finally overlapped, thanks to a Facebook user who shared the recipe for these truly deranged (in the best way) deviled eggs.

14. (Almost) every way to cook an egg

2019 was also the year that the beloved Bon Appétit YouTube channel shared a captivating video titled, "Every Way to Cook an Egg (59 Methods)." We must now refer to the video as "almost" every way to cook an egg, because the world didn't know about baby Yoda deviled eggs back in March.

Watching 59 ways to cook an egg is the perfect way to close out The Year of the Egg. Then consider making your own and chowing down while you wait for the sparkly egg in Times Square to drop.
