Trying times call for additional giving.

This year, sex. video Giving Tuesday, the global generosity movement known best for its day of charitable giving hosted on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving, has expanded its reach, adding an additional day of giving to its docket.

Consequently, May 5 now marks Giving Tuesday Now, a global day of giving launched as an emergency response to the dire need spurred by the coronavirus pandemic.

Asha Curran, the CEO of GivingTuesday, notes that while Giving Tuesday has never been activated in response to a crisis since its inception in 2012, all of the same principles behind the movement are still driving its current rollout.

"Giving Tuesday is always about bringing people together," Curran said. "Generosity is about solidarity, and it's about realizing we're all in this together. This moment of crisis is so horrible, and there's no way we can get through it alone."

Participating in Giving Tuesday Now doesn't require money. Curran's organization provides some ideas for how to show generosity and social connection during these difficult times.

If you do choose to donate money, the campaigns below can help your dollars go further, primarily by matching charitable donations. (Whenever donating money, make sure you've read up on best practices.)

1. Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch, an international NGO focused on human rights, is matching donations made today by five times. Your donation will go toward funding HRW's team of researchers, lawyers, and advocates working to ensure equal access to health care, among other human rights concerns. (This may not necessarily include direct coronavirus relief.)

2. No Kid Hungry

No Kid Hungry, a national campaign focused on ending child hunger, will be working on feeding kids who are dealing with hunger due to a loss in meals because of school closures, among other child hunger concerns. Donations of up to $200,000 will all be matched until 11:59 p.m. on May 5, thanks to a contribution from Kellogg's.

3. GoFundMe

GoFundMe, a crowdfunding platform, has launched a friendly fundraising competition for Giving Tuesday Now. Campaigns on the platform must be launched for eligible, U.S.-based 501(c)3 charities and must explain either how the organization was impacted by the coronavirus, or how the organization is helping causes related to the virus. (You can raise money on behalf of an organization that you don't work for.)

The 10 organizations to raise the most money by 11:59 p.m. ET on May 5 will win grants depending on their place, from $20,000 for first place to $1,000 for 10th place. Questions about the fundraising contest and eligibility can be found here.

4. Pajama Program

Pajama Program, a nonprofit that works to provide the tools necessary for developing a healthy bedtime routine for kids, is adding to donations until the end of May 5.

For every $10 donation made, Pajama Program will deliver a new pair of pajamas and a book to the child of an essential worker. (Your donation can help a child retain a sense of normalcy and maintain proper health, while the additional pajama and book donation might provide more direct coronavirus relief.)

5. Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood, an organization that provides reproductive health care services and education, is adding to donations made today. If you start a monthly gift to Planned Parenthood by midnight on May 5, an unnamed donor has committed to contributing an additional $100 for each monthly gift, for a potential donation total of up to $50,000. Your donation won't go directly to coronavirus relief, but it will strengthen Planned Parenthood's ability to provide health care services.
